There hasn't really been too much for me to say in the past week or so,
so I decided I'll talk about the Road to Wrestlemania. I wanted to talk
about the 3.3.11 video TNA ran last week, but since I know how it turns
out, I don't want my comments to ruin the surprise for those who don't
look at spoilers. Let's get this thing going...
- 2.21.11 - Ok, so it turned out to actually be the Undertaker. I was slightly disappointed but still glad to have him back. I thought the buildup on 2.21.11 was really great and the countdown really got me so pumped any disappointment went away. Though, in the final 10 seconds of the countdown I sent my buddy a text reading "BREAK THE WALLS DOWN!" The way Undertaker came out was pretty cool, and then Triple H turned out to be a real surprise. At first, I was a little critical of the segment. I thought it was dumb that they didn't say anything. Also, I thought they should have waited another few moments before bringing Triple H out. After sleeping on it, I woke up the next day and found that I actually liked the segment a lot and I realized how powerful it was. I think this will be a real great match. The video package they did this week with Shawn Michaels was really well done. I felt like it added another dimension to the match, and it's always fun to see HBK. This match alone can sell Wrestlemania to many.
- John Cena, the Miz, and the Rock: This is one of the hottest storylines going into Wrestlemania. Not only do I find myself and friends of mine tuning in waiting to see what's going to happen next between Cena and the Rock, but they are doing a great job of promoting it through the use of social media. I absolutely love John Cena's rap on the Rock last week. I felt like Cena said exactly what I was thinking regarding the Rock leaving WWE and then saying he loves being there. The Rock's response was pretty strong. By the way, can WWE stop giving us those shots of the audience watching the video on the tron? It takes some of the impact of the promo away. There was a lot of intensity and some of the Rock's latest tweets make it seem as though he may appear on RAW next week. I feel like Miz has been working really hard not to be forgotten in all of this, and I think he's doing a good job. He is being booked to get the upper hand on Cena from time to time. All of the distraction with the Rock also gives Miz a little bit more of an edge against Cena. WWE is doing all they can right now to make it less obvious that Cena will take the title at Wrestlemania. Also, as silly and meaningless as it seemed, all the phone stuff on RAW really was history making. Not big history, but it's never been done before.
- Edge and Alberto Del Rio: WWE is still building Del Rio up as dangerous and doing a pretty good job of it. He has been looking especially strong lately. Now that Edge seems to finally be done with Vicky and Dolph he can fully focus on Del Rio. The only thing I'm confused about is where was Christian on Smackdown? He made a big return at Elimination Chamber and we haven't seen him since. I'd still love to see him added to this match and it would make perfect sense to put him in. I don't know what's going on with Dolph Ziggler but I'm starting to feel more like he will be kept off TV until after Wrestlemania. It's kind of a shame because he's a great talent, but I think it may be getting a bit late to start something new with him in time to build it up for Wrestlemania.
- Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler: I'm happy Lawler is finally getting his Wrestlemania match, even if it's with an announcer. This match should be pretty fun and I'm sure the crowd is going to pop the first time Cole gets knocked around. The addition of Jack Swagger is both good and bad. It's good for the match, because it gives Cole more of a chance to win. It's bad for Jack Swagger because he's gone from winning Money in the Bank last year to being a corner man this year. I'm really interested to find out who the referee will be. My first guess would have been Alex Riley but he seems to be out of the picture for now. Also, with both Cole and Lawler wrestling, I'm curious to see who will be calling the matches. As of right now, we are left with Josh Matthews and Booker T. I'm sure they will still be there but does WWE have enough faith in them to lead the commentary for the biggest show of the year? Personally, I think we are going to see the return of Jim Ross. Could be wishful thinking but I have a feeling.
- Randy Orton and CM Punk: This match could possibly steal the show. Both of these guys are really talented and two of my favorites. I think we will see a straight one on one match without the New Nexus involved. So far the New Nexus has lost both Husky Harris and Michael McGuillicutty. By the time Wrestlemania rolls around Orton will have wrestled Mason Ryan and David Otunga to determine whether or not they can be at Wrestlemania. I see them both losing to Orton and being sent down to FCW to be repackaged. Aside from Punk everyone in the New Nexus can still improve a lot and really benefit from more time in FCW.
- Rey Mysterio and Cody Rhodes: This should be a good match. Personally, instead of having Cody wear protective gear, I would have had him wear a mask and wrestle Rey in a Mask vs Mask match. Dusty Rhodes this week was a bit of an odd touch. It's always good to see Dusty but I don't really buy him as a bad guy. Cody came out of his segment on Smackdown looking pretty good. I wouldn't worry about this match. Part of me can honestly see Cody either winning this match or attacking Rey after the match. This could lead up to a surprise debut for Sin Cara. He could run in and save Rey from the beatdown. That would give Sin Cara a program to start off with and Rey can take some time off. I doubt it will happen and Sin Cara will likely debut after Wrestlemania, but I'm excited to see how he does.
- Sheamus, Daniel Bryan, John Morrison, Kofi Kingston, and Evan Bourne: I so want to see what these guys will be doing at Wrestlemania. Last week I thought WWE was starting to build up to Sheamus vs Daniel Bryan for the US Title at Wrestlemania. But then, this week Sheamus was destroyed by Triple H and Daniel Bryan was attacked by Miz. I honestly can't remember actually seeing Morrison on RAW this week. If he wasn't on the show, he's probably still feeling the effects of the Elimination Chamber. Evan Bourne got a nice introduction and pop for his return this week so I believe WWE has plans for him. I assume there will be a Money in the Bank match involving a bunch of these guys.
- Hall of Fame Class of 2011: Shawn Michaels is clearly the main inductee this year. Hacksaw is a good induction. Even though I have never been a big fan of his, I was surprised that he wasn't already inducted. Bullet Bob Armstrong is an interesting induction. He's before my time and I don't really know much about him. I thought they should have announced his induction on RAW. I guess they didn't announce it on RAW because they figured no one knew or cared about him. If they think no one cares about him, why induct him? If they think know one knows about him, why not prepare a nice video package to inform fans as to why he's being inducted? It just seemed really odd to me.
I hope I hit on all the important stuff. Until next time...
